North Hills Garden Club

(Taken in part from the North Hills Garden Club Membership Directory)

The North Hills Garden Club currently has over 60 members. Our neighborhood has benefited from the services of our dedicated members since 1935.

In those early years, we worked to rebuild the stone entrance gates, organized neighborhood gatherings, and coordinated civic needs, such as postal service.

Today, our members continue to beautify the boulevards and act as the contact with the City Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Dogwood Arts Festival Committee. Most recently, we built the neighborhood park and supplied it with such amenities as a drinking fountain, a gazebo, and light posts.

We continue to bring the neighborhood together for celebrations. We sponsor an annual picnic in the park as well as seasonal events like Fall Festivals and Easter Egg Hunts for the neighborhood children. Our holiday tour of homes opens up some of our historic homes to neighbors as well as to people from other areas.

Members of the Garden Club are encouraged to invite their neighbors to join at any time or to invite them to attend any of the meetings as a special guest. (Or contact the site administrator at northhills@ymail.com and your email will be forwarded to the appropriate person.)

Join the North Hills Garden Club!

The NHGC welcomes all of North Hills residents to join and participate in our neighborhood activities. We have monthly meetings (except for the summer months) at our own homes that usually have a gardening theme as well as business meeting, always topped off with delicious refreshments and much socializing with other neighbors. This is truly the best way to get to know those in our area and to make lasting friendships. Some members have created a “Girls Night Out” which will try out different area restaurants one Wednesday each month.

Key points:

* You do not have to be an avid gardener to join. You do not need to have a showcase yard.
* Annual dues are $15, which includes your meal at a the September ‘social’ as well as all the yummies at each meeting.
* There is no committee that screens members, nor is there a need to be ‘invited’ to join.
* Each year we have a member directory with names, numbers and emails of all members as well as the by-laws and the meetings for the year.
* The NHGC has their own Yahoo! group for members only. You can get the scoop on free plants from this site.

North Hills Garden Club History

Excerpts from the North Hills Garden Club, Membership Directory, as told by Mrs. J. Temple Fraker, 1997

The North Hills Garden Club (NHGC) was organized in 1935 to provide community activities and to beautify the boulevards. The NHGC was successful in raising funds which were used to develop the North Hills park located off Kennington. One fundraiser was a carnival in 1941, which was reportedly “fun both in the practice session and in the performance”. The club’s history also speaks to a “junior” garden club that was sponsored for many years.
